A Special Gift is a simple, heartfelt poem about the moment a father realizes his life has changed forever. It begins with gratitude, not for something earned, but for a blessing received, a child placed in his arms and in his heart. The lines are plain on purpose, because the feeling is plain too: awe, love, and the kind of joy that brings tears without warning.
This poem captures what many parents struggle to put into words. Time moves fast. Years “twirl” by. Yet the heart keeps returning to that first glance, that first wave of love, and the quiet promise to cherish every season that follows. A Special Gift is not trying to be complicated. It is a keepsake, written for anyone who still remembers holding their child and thinking, I will never be the same.
It’s a celebration of fatherhood, a tribute to a daughter, and a reminder that some gifts shape a lifetime.
“A Special Gift” is a heartfelt reflection on the day a father received one of life’s greatest blessings. In simple, grateful lines, David Ritter honors the love and wonder of holding his baby girl for the first time.
A Special Gift
Many years ago today
God smiled down on me
Then handed me a special gift
For all the world to see
It changed my life forever
This treasure from above
And when I first saw it
I knew I was in love
It filled my heart with joy
Down inside my chest
I knew without a doubt
I was truly blessed
I held this special gift
My eyes filled with tears
And to this day I’m still humbled
Despite the passing years
This gift remains priceless
More precious than a pearl
And I will always cherish
My special baby girl

A beautiful poem. And I agree with the sentiments you express.
