From Storms to Sunrises – A Poem by David Ritter

Five years ago today, I embarked on a journey of self-discovery, celebrating another year of sobriety on this special anniversary, July 13th, 2024. This past year has been a whirlwind of emotions, with the bittersweet loss of loved ones, including my precious daughter, Cassie. Though grief touched my heart, her children became a beautiful part of my life, and I am so grateful to be there for them.

Yet amidst the challenges, life bloomed with joy. I reclaimed my independence by getting my license back after 23 years. My passion for poetry continued to flourish as I published my fourth book. My pool team won our first tournament, and my Etsy store reached people around the world. Even Michigan’s championship win brought a special bit of pride.

Personal milestones filled my year with warmth. Zack bought his first new car. Rachel and Zach are expecting their first child. Elia conquered her freshman year of college. My sister Deneen visited twice from Florida.

This year also brought a furry blessing into my life. I became a first-time dog lover. Sonny, if you’re reading this, you’ve brought endless cuddles, laughter, and a whole new appreciation for long walks.

Through it all, my faith in God has been an unwavering source of strength, held together by the support of my recovery group. Most importantly, I remained sober. This journey of recovery is fueled by a desire to help others find their own path. My hope is that this poem offers encouragement for anyone seeking a brighter tomorrow. Thank you for joining me on this journey.

From Storms to Sunrises

Through storms I once battled, drenched deep in despair, I found a new pathway, a breath of fresh air. Peace, like a healing balm, now soothes my mind, God’s grace still fills every hole it can find. Five years of sunrises chasing darkness away, My heart, once an ember, glows brighter each day. With friends by my side, a fortress so strong, We weather life’s storms, a chorus in song. The path I once wandered, where shadows once clung, Now bathed in new light, a new purpose is sung. So listen, dear friend, if burdens you bear, There’s a hopeful horizon, a joy we can share. Let not fear be your jailer, nor doubt be your guide, A song hums within you—let courage reside. Together we’ll journey, no need to walk alone; Take that first step toward healing, and find your way home. —David Ritter
