If She Had Said “Don’t Go”- A Poem by David Ritter

“If She Had Said ‘Don’t Go’” is a poignant exploration of love, loss, and longing. Through vivid imagery and heartfelt emotion, the poem reflects on an imagined future that never came to be — a tender portrayal of devotion, regret, and the ache of what might have been.

If She Had Said “Don’t Go”

I would have grasped her securely in my arms,
whispering soothingly, how much I cared.
Letting her tears flow gently down my shoulder,
as I tenderly announced, “I’m not going anywhere.”

I would have kissed her and held her oh so tight,
’til my unwavering grip gave way.
Then looked her deep within her saddened face,
declaring everything would be okay.

I would have been her protector and provider,
gifts of flowers, cards, and a simple kiss.
During the times she was not by my side
I would have proved how much she was missed.

I would have cheered her up when she was sad,
treated her like a queen, given her my ring;
every night I would have prayed that in her heart,
I would be her one and only king.

I would have slipped into bed caressing her,
kissing her on the neck, holding her through the night,
waking up staring into her precious green eyes,
making love, at the break of dawn’s morning light…

As though I cherished her while she lay sleeping.
