“Homesick” is a warm and nostalgic tribute to childhood farm life. Through vivid imagery and heartfelt reflection, the poem captures the longing for home and the simple joys that shaped a young heart.
Homesick
One thing remains in my memory
My childhood home is what I see
Where the rooster’s crow helps welcome the morn
Fog hovers low as a new day is born
Thoughts of my mama saying, “I love you”
Aromas in the air, Pa’s cup of brew
A prayer before breakfast, “God bless us”
The walk down the drive to wait for the bus
Stalking the woods in my pursuit for prey
Paint on the fence from a twelve-hour day
Feeding chickens and milking the cow
Work by the sweat of my brow
Into the fields I would go
To lose my mind, find my soul
Adventures in the barn painted red
Endless chores till my fingers bled
Praying for rain so the crops would grow
These moments this farmer boy knows
I longed to leave once before
Now I wish I could go back even more
One thing remains in my memory
My childhood home is what I see
