My Path to Recovery- A Poem by David Ritter

Recovery was not easy
when I was alone
Some days I felt queasy
for my future was unknown

But my heart was still beating
And therein lay the hope
So I went to a meeting
and learned tools for me to cope

Surrounded by others
they all quickly came to be
Sisters and brothers
who accepted me as me

Now every day I choose to sing
a brand-new song
and thanking my higher power
for a place I now belong

Sometimes sobriety is hard
I live it day by day
But I refuse to let down my guard
by going to AA

and with each passing day
on the path to be free
God helped lead the way
but the first step was up to me
