Parenthood – A Poem by David Ritter

“Parenthood” is a heartfelt tribute to the joys and challenges of raising children. With warm imagery and honest reflection, this poem embraces every moment—from messy days to meaningful milestones—and celebrates the unconditional love that makes parenthood life’s greatest reward.

Parenthood

One thing remains in life that’s good
The reward that comes with parenthood
Challenges and sorrow will fill some days
But triumph and joy will lead the way

Doctor visits and trips to the beach
ABCs and manners to teach
Writing out a Christmas list
Healing boo-boos with a kiss

Misplaced tools and spilled perfume
Countless dashes to the bathroom
Cleaning messes trippin’ on toys
Birthday parties filled with noise

Smelly diapers and sleepless nights
Building a snowman and flying kites
School activities and learning to drive
Praying fervently they come back alive

Becoming a hero for smashing a bug
Mending a broken heart with just a hug
Rockin’ a little one while they weep
A gentle song to aid their sleep

A baby’s first steps and first word
The most pleasing sounds ears have heard
Until they grow with much to do
And reward you with an “I love you”

Challenges and sorrow will fill some days
But triumph and joy will lead the way
One thing remains in life that’s good
The reward that comes with parenthood
