A couple embracing on the beach at sunset, symbolizing love, loss, and longing — imagery inspired by David Ritter’s poem “Summer Love.”

Summer Love – A Poem by David Ritter

A bittersweet exploration of love and loss. “Summer Love” captures the intensity of a passionate relationship and the heart-wrenching reality of its potential end. Through vivid imagery and raw emotion, the poet navigates the complexities of desire, hope, and longing.

Summer Love

Sweet burn of sun and August wind
Summer love comes to an end
And now the skies are dark and gray
As if the sun has lost its way

The Autumn trees begin to weep
Baring their souls before they sleep
I’ll rake their sorrows from the past
Mourn all beauty that did not last

When life becomes both sharp and cold
I’ll long for you again to hold
I’ll harvest all the love I can
And hope to one day be your man

I’ll pray for us when Fall is done
For heat from love and Winter’s sun
When birds return I too will sing
About the joy your love will bring

But if you choose my heart to break
Before the trees begin to wake
Come Summer in the sky above
You’ll feel my warmth of summer love
