What Matters Remains – A Poem by David Ritter

What Matters Remains is a gentle reflection on aging gracefully, finding peace in faith, and learning to treasure life’s simple blessings. As the years pass and the noise fades, we begin to see what truly endures — love, faith, and the quiet beauty of ordinary days.

What Matters Remains

As you grow older, your vision grows clear,
The world softens its edges, and stillness draws near.
No longer caught up in the rush or the race,
You welcome small mercies and rest in their grace.

The urge to prove something begins to dissolve,
Old tensions grow quiet and gently resolve.
You wander from the noise and the need to be right,
And follow the peace that shines in God’s light.

You stop chasing people who just never knew
The worth of your spirit, the strength within you.
A handshake means more than the treasures they hold,
And hugs feel like sunsets that shimmer in gold.

A warm cup of coffee, a breeze through the trees,
The comfort of laughter that puts you at ease.
Not marble or mansions, but walls that are worn
By love that has lingered through memories born.

So cherish each moment, each joy that you find,
Leave worries and troubles and drama behind.
When all else has faded and life’s seasons wane,
God’s love still whispers — what matters remains.
