You Used To…” is a poignant reflection on the enduring pain of loss. With raw and heart-wrenching simplicity, David Ritter captures the bittersweet memories of a parent’s love. Through vivid imagery and emotional honesty, the poem evokes a deep sense of longing and sorrow as the speaker grapples with the absence of their child.
You Used To
You used to call me “Mommy”
I used to hold you tight
I used to hug and kiss you
As I tucked you in at nightYou used to call me “Daddy”
Whenever I entered the door
I used to tickle your tummy
As we played on the floorYou used to write, “To Mommy”
On colored pictures I displayed
You used to repeat the words
To each prayer that we prayedYou used to say, “More, Daddy”
While bouncing on my knee
You used to giggle loud
That filled my heart with gleeYou used to sing with Mommy
As Mommy prepared a meal
You used to bring me boo-boos
That only Mommy’s kisses healedYou used to cry for Daddy
When the boogieman was near
You used to know in Daddy’s arms
There was never any fearWe cried the day you left us
We cried again today
It seems at times that’s all we’ve done
Since that day you went awayDavid Ritter

MEMORIES FOR KEEPS
A collection of poetry that reveals one man’s feelings about the world around him. With spirituality the centerpiece of most of his writings, the author touches the hearts and minds of readers with hope, peace, love, humility, wisdom, and wit. While tackling topics ranging from grief to fatherhood, from addictions to friendships, this writer captures the essence of a born-again, alcoholic dad who is grateful to have finally found serenity in life. Today, through this collection of both old and new works, he shares that serenity with you!
BOTTLED MEMORIES
These stand-alone poems were written over many years. While individually they describe the conflicts associated with alcoholism, when read together they reveal a more complete picture of the destruction, depression, and chaos of addiction, as well as the peace, hope, and joy of recovery. Although most of these poems pertain to my life, it is my hope that other people will relate to them also. It’s not only my story but the story of so many others.
