A Father’s Lament – A Poem by David Ritter

A Father’s Lament — Grief affects each of us differently. For me, it usually stays hidden, only coming up in the quiet moments of the night. I do share with close family and friends, but my real comfort comes from prayer and putting pen to paper. Writing helps me find peace in the storm of emotions — turning sleepless nights and lingering regret into words that honor both love and loss. In A Father’s Lament, I explore those unspoken feelings, giving voice to the lasting sorrow and the hope for reunion that remains.

A Father’s Lament

A shadow lingers, a somber sigh,
A vacant chair, a tear-stained eye.
My heart lies shattered, my spirit torn,
Love now lost; with regrets I mourn.

I question the heavens, a silent plea:
Why is fate so cruel, why not me?
I search for answers, a futile quest,
Longing for peace, with a soul distressed.

I walk alone, like a ghost at night,
Haunted by memories, a solemn sight.
I yearn to hold her, to ease her fear,
To banish the grief, to dry each tear.

In dreams, I see her smiling face,
A fleeting moment, a soft embrace.
But as dawn breaks, the vision fades,
Leaving shadows, on words I prayed.

If I could turn back, time’s cruel hand,
I’d shield her heart, from this wicked land.
I’d mend the wounds, that marked our way,
And bring her home, for her to stay.

’Til we meet again, on heaven’s shore,
Her memory I’ll carry, forevermore.
A love eternal, through nights I weep,
A father’s lament, a sorrow I keep.
