Each year, I take a moment to reflect on where I have been, where I am, and how far God has brought me. Recovery is not about perfection, it is about progress, grace, and honesty. Another Year Today was originally titled Six Years Today, and it remains a reminder that growth continues one day, one year, and one prayer at a time. I hope these words speak to anyone walking a hard road or learning to believe that change is possible. I added links at the end to more poems written in honor of my sobriety date.
Another Year Today
I like the person I am today,
not perfect, no, but that’s okay.
I’m happy, free, and mostly sane,
no longer trapped by booze and pain.
Life still gets heavy now and then,
but it’s not the weight it was back when,
I blamed the world for all my sorrow,
and feared the light of each tomorrow.
I used to drink to dull the ache,
to dodge regret I couldn’t shake.
I left some scars, I made a mess,
then drank it down to feel it less.
When hope was gone without a trace,
God led me to a saving place.
I walked with others just like me,
and found a path that set me free.
Now every day I seek His will,
a little wiser, learning still,
with peace of mind and joy inside,
and love that I no longer hide.
So here I sit with a humbled heart,
still grateful for this brand-new start.
through grace and growth, I found my way,
and I’m still sober another year today.
