Don’t Cry For Me – A Poem by David Ritter

Don’t Cry for Me is a memorial poem written from the voice of someone who has passed, offering comfort to the ones left behind. It acknowledges the pain of death, but it shifts the focus toward hope, imagining Heaven not as a distant mystery, but as a warm homecoming. In these verses, faith is pictured through familiar scenes: Jesus waiting with open arms, loved ones reunited, and the small comforts of family life made whole again. Even the details feel personal and human, from a favorite meal to a ballgame on in the background, from Grandma rocking babies to an old dog barking a joyful welcome.

This poem is meant for funerals, memorial services, and quiet moments of grief when words are hard to find. It does not deny sorrow, but it gently speaks into it, reminding the reader that love continues, reunion is promised, and the ones we miss are not lost. Don’t Cry for Me offers reassurance, tenderness, and a steady message of peace.

“Don’t Cry for Me” is a comforting memorial poem that reminds us death is not the end, but a homecoming filled with love, joy, and familiar faces. May these words bring peace to grieving hearts and hope in the promise of Heaven.

Don’t Cry For Me

One day I’ll lie upon a bed
and someone near will declare me dead
Don’t cry for me when my time is done
for life for me has just begun

I’ll enter Heaven through pearly gates
and walk down streets of gold
Jesus will be waiting with open arms
and my beloveds young and old

Grandma will be holding the babies
while rocking in her chair
And Mom will be cooking my favorite meal
saying how happy she is I’m there

Grandpa will be taking a peaceful nap
and smiling as he dreams
And Dad will be watching the ballgame
and cheering his beloved team

Old Blue will be barking a welcome
while wagging his stubby tail
And we’ll go stalking the fields again
in search of pheasant and quail

Angels will be singing sweet melodies
soothing all worldly fears
And pain and suffering will finally cease
along with the needless tears

So don’t cry for me when my time is done
for there will be so much to do
I’ll be in Heaven with those from the past
helping prepare a home for you
