“I’m Not Mad at You” is a current events poem by David Ritter written in memory of Renée Good. I did not know her personally, but the story shook me deeply. This poem is shared as a reflection on grief, empathy, and how cold the world can feel when compassion disappears. It is not meant to spark debate, only to express a heartbreak I could not ignore.

I’m Not Mad at You

“I’m not mad at you,” I heard her say,
Then he shot her as she drove away.
I watched in horror, now she’s dead,
“Fcking Btch,” was what he said.

A loving mother, shot in the face,
Denied all mercy, denied all grace.
I didn’t know her, but it makes me sad,
And I wonder now: has the world gone mad?

I’m still in shock that her life is gone,
While darkness acts like nothing’s wrong.
I don’t know why she had to be there,
But I know what happened wasn’t fair.

Some claim she brought this fate somehow,
But I can’t call wrongness righteous now.
For hearts grow cold and truth feels thin,
When pride won’t let compassion in.

May God forgive what we’ve become,
With hearts shut down, love for only some.
How did this world turn so damn cold,
That we believe the lies we’re told?

You may not like what I have to say,
Or how I felt that tragic day.
But even if you won’t see it too,
It’s okay… “I’m not mad at you.”
