Looking Up
“Looking Up” is a reflection on faith, healing, and gratitude. It was written after I got sober, during a time when I began to truly notice the beauty around me again — the sunrise, the breeze, and the cardinals that remind me of my daughter, Cassie. I hope this poem encourages you to lift your eyes, find peace in God’s grace, and remember that even in sorrow, there’s still beauty all around us.
Looking Up
There was a time I hung my head,
No light within, my spirit dead.
I walked with eyes fixed on the ground,
Too ashamed to look around.
The sun would rise in painted blue,
Yet sorrow dimmed each golden hue.
The trees would dance with the breeze;
Too numb to notice gifts like these.
Then came a day I looked above
And felt the warmth of grace and love.
The chains fell off, my soul set free,
A better man woke up in me.
God’s love runs deep, His mercy wide.
He lights the path, my constant guide.
In morning dew or evening shade,
I now see beauty His hands have made.
A bright new dawn at break of day
Reminds me not to look away.
A redbird calls from up a tree,
A sign my daughter walks with me.
I see the stars when night draws near;
They whisper gently, “I am here.”
I depend on Him to fill my cup,
And every day… I’m looking up.
