Collage of hands holding coins, a luxury sports car, a large mansion, and a funeral casket being carried, symbolizing the contrast between material wealth and life’s deeper truths.

Material Things – A Poem by David Ritter

“Material Things” is a candid reflection on the contrast between wealth and struggle. Through honest, relatable moments, this poem reminds us that love, humility, and human connection far outweigh anything money can buy.

Material Things

I have rested my head in a soft warm bed
And I’ve slept on a cold hard floor
Times there were when my cup overflowed
And times I wished I had more

I have counted my pennies when times were bleak
And I’ve had plenty of cash in the bank
I have scraped to put a little gas in my car
I’ve been able to fill the tank

My table at times full of fruits from my labor
At times there was barely a snack
I have walked through a store without one worry
And I’ve had to put stuff back

There were times when my pockets were empty
There were times they were full too
At times paying the rent would come easy
I’ve also struggled when it was due

I have prayed in times I’ve been happy
And I’ve prayed in times I’ve been sad
At times I’ve held the whole world in my hands
At times prayer was all I had

You can live in the largest of mansions
And still feel a coldness inside
When the love in your heart becomes smothered
By the shadow of your stubborn pride

Possessions and wealth may give your life ease
But greed can turn you ice cold
For cheer of good friends and a family to love
Are worth more than diamonds or gold

Do not dwell on the things you possess
But cherish your loved ones instead
Possessions are all left behind
On the journey to the Land of the Dead

Though your fortune may be a great one
No greater will be your prize
When we’re finally laid down to rest
Our graves are all the same size

You can’t take any stuff with you
So share your love and be kind
Though others are left to fight over
Material things you’ve left behind
