One Last Walk is a poem born from grief, faith, and the quiet wisdom that often comes from a child’s voice. Written after the loss of a father, it captures a moment of sorrow softened by innocence and belief. Rather than focusing only on pain, this poem reframes loss through the lens of comfort, love, and spiritual hope.
At the center of the poem is a simple but powerful idea: a child’s understanding of heaven as a continuation of a relationship already lived. The image of a grandfather walking and talking with God reflects a life rooted in faith and devotion, offering peace instead of despair. In this telling, death is not sudden or frightening, but gentle, familiar, and welcomed.
One Last Walk speaks to families navigating loss while holding onto belief, especially those seeking reassurance during difficult moments. It reminds readers that comfort can arrive in unexpected ways and that love, faith, and memory often work together to carry us through grief. This poem honors legacy, belief, and the healing power of a child’s perspective.
“One Last Walk” is a tender and faith-filled poem that captures a child’s comforting understanding of loss. Through her words, David Ritter reminds us that heaven is not the end—it’s the beginning of peace.
One Last Walk
We had my father’s funeral today
And it really made me sad
Afterward my little daughter
Spoke these words about my dad
She said daddy don’t you worry now
There’s no need for you to cry
I know that Grandpa rests in heaven
And I’ll be glad to tell you why
You always said that Grandpa walked
And talked to God each day
I think that during one of these walks
Grandpa had much to say
They walked and talked for hours
’til Grandpa was finally spent
So God invited him home with Him
And Grandpa happily went
