“The Fight” is a powerful poem of struggle, surrender, and redemption. Through raw honesty and vivid spiritual imagery, David Ritter shares the journey from darkness into grace — a reminder that true victory is found not in resistance, but in letting go.
The Fight
My life became chaos when I wandered off its course,
Down a path of misery from a road of remorse.
While stumbling through this darkness and itching to fight,
I came upon someone who provided me some light.
As soon as I could see I saw He was a King,
And in my drunken stupor I chose to take a swing.
Although I looked foolish I fought with all my might,
Until I gave up to His Majesty’s delight.
Tired and defeated I kneeled before Him,
And waited for my punishment to surely begin.
But instead of being punished He showered me with grace,
When my eyes looked upon His glorious face.
He gave me a lifeline for me to take hold of,
One full of mercy and never-ending love.
Old things have passed away and now all things are new,
And what He did for me He wants to do for you.
Ask for forgiveness and turn away from sin,
Stop battling the bottle — you’re never gonna win.
If your life feels empty and looking kinda grim,
Turn your eyes upon Jesus and surrender to Him.
