A BATTLE FOR KINDNESS- A POEM BY DAVID RITTER

I posted this poem on Facebook asking for recommendations for a title. There were some wonderful suggestions and I want to thank everyone who responded. I decided to go with one of my own, A BATTLE FOR KINDNESS. I feel it drives home the message I am trying to convey in my poem, the lack of empathy in America. It’s obvious that the country is divided but I never dreamed there would be such hatred. I’ve never experienced in my lifetime (53 years) such ugliness that is going on in my country. If someone looks, acts, or thinks differently, we tend to treat them badly. We struggle to understand people who aren’t like us but find it easy to hate them and I feel Christians can be the worst offenders, including myself. I pray to have more empathy for my fellow Americans, and I hope you do too. If you like the poem, please do share it on your social media. Thanks for reading!

A BATTLE FOR KINDNESS

My beloved country is split and mad,
brotherhood a memory, we once had.
Two sides, believing that they’re both right,
embracing ignorance while they fight.

We the people should try, a little more,
to rise above the chaos where eagles soar.
Accepting each other, both me and you,
will help remove storms for a better view.

Why can’t we allow all others to be,
part of God’s universal family?
But instead, we reject, attack, and blame,
And we do it all, in Jesus’ name.

It’s easy to look at everyone’s flaws,
ignoring our own and seeking applause.
How dare we try judging, one person’s path,
when the one we walk is filled with wrath.

For people who don’t share our same ideal,
we shame them for how they think and feel.
Instead of warm hugs, we give out a shove,
revealing our hate rather than love.

I’m far from perfect, in this life I’m in,
I’m only a poet with ink and pen.
But I hope, that when others, think of me,
they’ll at least, see a man, with empathy.
