A woman sitting alone by a lakeshore, reflecting quietly as waves roll in — symbolizing grief, healing, and remembrance.

I Try – A Poem by David Ritter

“I Try” is a tender reflection on grief, healing, and the memories that keep our loved ones close even after they’re gone.

I Try

I’ll never forget the agony
I felt the day you died
I wish I could have swum to you
down the river of tears I’ve cried

But with each passing day
I’m learning to get by
I know you’d want me happy
so each passing day I try

As the holidays roll up
instead of being sad
I choose to remember on that date
holiday memories that we had

I always celebrate your birthday
’though you’re no longer here
by recalling all the pleasant times
we had throughout the years

I like to stare at pictures
of you and your shiny smile
I wish I could come visit you
I would run every mile

Yes… I still miss you a lot
I’m learning to get by
’though I still have my bad days
God knows how much I try
