“Gone Flying” is a memorial poem by David Ritter honoring those who loved the skies, the freedom of flight, and the dreams that lift the spirit. With gentle imagery of clouds, stars, and Heavenly Light, it offers comfort to grieving hearts and a reminder that love still travels with us.
Gone Flying
I dream of a Kingdom high up in the blue,
Where pilots take flight, their dreams come true.
Propellers hum, a welcoming song,
An aerial haven where I belong.
Where cotton-white giants cast shadows below,
On fields and roads where memories flow.
The moon winks a greeting, the sun bids farewell,
This magical place where dreams gently dwell.
The stars paint the night, a glittering dome,
A beacon for travelers seeking their home.
Though grounded I was, my spirit took flight,
Forever embraced by this Heavenly Light.
One day with a roar and a heart full of glee,
I rose with the currents, finally set free.
So let joy fill your hearts, let sorrows pass,
For I’ve gone flying like eagles, my dream at last.

My dad loved to fly. When we were young, he took us up for a short flight in his flying club plane. I loved to look down at the little squares of fields, the lakes, and especially homes that had swimming pools. His love of flying lasted his lifetime.
Thank you so much for sharing this beautiful memory of your dad. I can just picture you looking down at the patchwork of fields and lakes, spotting those swimming pools from above. What a special gift he gave you, not just the experience of flying, but a lifelong memory shaped by his love of the sky. Stories like this are exactly why I write these poems, to honor the passions that stay with us long after our loved ones are gone.
